Understanding adoption
Discover more about how children come to be adopted and the children who wait the longest to be adopted.
Find out moreAcross the UK, thousands of children are currently waiting to be adopted. Each of them has faced significant challenges, experiencing loss, trauma, and, in many cases, neglect or abuse. What they need most is the stability, love, and commitment of a permanent family—one that will provide them with the care and security every child deserves.
Adoption is the legal process by which children who can no longer be cared for by their birth family, formally and permanently join another family. It is a life-changing process that offers these children a fresh start in a nurturing and supportive home. It is the chance to provide a child, who can no longer be raised by their birth family, with a lifelong sense of belonging. Adoptive parents commit to standing by their child, advocating for their needs, and offering the love and security that will help them heal and thrive. Adoption is not just about giving a child a home—it’s about giving them a family for life.
Every child is unique. Every story is unique. How their story impacts their life will look different for each individual. But we know that each and every child and young person has inherent value and worth; they are brimming with potential. When adoption is deemed the best decision for a child, the stable home, unwavering support and loving relationships can allow children to thrive.
As of October 2023, there were 2,210 children waiting for adoption in England
have been waiting for more than 18 months
average age for adoption in England is 3 years and 5 months
It’s important to acknowledge that the loss and trauma that is part of every child young person with care experience’s story will often, understandably, have an impact on their lives. Some may struggle with trust, confidence or building healthy relationships. Some may have health issues or additional needs. Some may find it challenging to understand and navigate big emotions.
Adoptive families are needed for children of all ages and both genders, but there is often a particular need for families who are able to adopt groups of siblings, children with disabilities or medical needs, children of Black and minority ethnic heritage and children over the age of four.
